history of the band

The All-America Concert Band was founded in 1961 as a community-based ensemble dedicated to providing high-level musical opportunities for talented musicians across the Siouxland region. Conceived by a group of local educators and professional musicians, the band quickly established itself as a premier performing group, drawing performers from high schools, colleges, and the greater community.

From its earliest years, the All-America Concert Band has held a unique place in the musical culture of Sioux City. The ensemble was envisioned not only as a venue for musical excellence, but also as a platform for mentorship and collaboration among musicians of all ages. High school students performed side-by-side with adult musicians and educators, fostering a spirit of cooperation and artistic growth.

Throughout its history, the band has performed a wide array of repertoire—from wind band classics to contemporary works—often featuring guest soloists and conductors. Rehearsals have long taken place at Morningside University, strengthening the ensemble’s ties to the academic and artistic community in Sioux City.

In addition to public performances, the All-America Concert Band has provided ongoing educational value by encouraging top-tier high school musicians to push their skills beyond the school ensemble setting. Participation has always required a director’s recommendation, ensuring a high musical standard.

Today, the All-America Concert Band continues to thrive under the leadership of Dr. Christopher Brandt, Director of Bands at Morningside University. With a renewed commitment to excellence, community engagement, and intergenerational collaboration, the ensemble remains a cornerstone of the region’s musical life. Through its Wednesday evening rehearsals and public concerts, the band provides a vibrant and enriching experience for performers and audiences alike—carrying forward a tradition now more than six decades strong.
